Engen Cares

At Engen, we view our responsibility to the environment and society as being as important as our responsibility towards our shareholders and employees. That is why we endeavor to fuel more than your vehicle and pour our energy into meaningful social investments, sustainability interventions and sponsorships. We are proud of our traditions of supporting and uplifting communities in which we do business and endeavor to continue to be a caring and responsible corporate citizen.

Sustainability in Focus

Our view of sustainable development is informed by the importance of creating and protecting value across the following six sustainability capitals: Manufactured, Human, Intellectual, Natural, Social and Financial. In our effort to provide high quality products and services to our stakeholders, we strive to continually enhance our value creation, while addressing the environmental impacts across the six capitals.

In 2015, the world adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. When we look at these goals, we realise that sustainability is more than the sustainability of the business in a changing environment. Rather, it refers to a business that becomes part of the mechanism working towards a world that can continue to sustain life today, and into the future.

The sustainability challenges faced by the world cover all sustainability capitals, with Engen playing a significant role in the following six of the 17 Sustainable Development goals:

  1.   Good Health and Well-Being
  2.   Quality Education
  3.   Clean Water and Sanitation
  4.   Affordable and Clean Energy
  5.   Decent Work and Economic Growth
  6.   Reduced Inequalities

While individual businesses may be unable to change the world, the combined effort of multiple businesses making their own contributions towards sustainability will change the world.

Our contribution in the six areas highlighted is embedded in how we do our business and reflected in our value system.

We continue to contribute to economic growth through access to energy. We continue to provide these services through a range of customer-focused offerings, and in a manner that recognises the value of our ecosystems and social stratifications everywhere we operate.

We also aim to make continual improvements towards sustainable social capital in Zimbabwe by creating jobs with our franchise model. We believe it is critical for our business to make a positive impact by being an active participant in community development. This eventually contributes to poverty alleviation and leads to vibrant communities.

We value our employees and we strive to protect them from hazards and exposure to harmful substances. We aim to achieve this through our HSSEQ processes and systems.

We also train and develop our people into leaders who can make all these aspirations possible.

Ultimately, the sustainability of our financial capital depends on how we perform on all the other sustainability capitals.

Health

Engen promotes employee health and well-being through conducting Health Risk Assessments (HRAs) to identify and control occupational health risks. In addition, the company provides employee health services to encourage employees to live healthy, balanced lifestyles through the employee care and wellness programmes.

Safety

We continue our safety transformation journey and are moving towards a generative safety Culture through a systematic approach to managing behaviour and mind-set. We have put a number of initiatives in place to improve our Safety performance. These span across our key focus areas of people and culture, work processes and management systems, land transportation, and contractor management. Safety is our License to Operate and a non-negotiable.

Security

Security is of paramount importance in our operations. As such, we invest in measures that ensure the security of our employees, products and customers. These include engaging reputable security services providers, security monitoring systems like CCTVs and measures to prevent product tampering.

Environment

We rely both directly and indirectly on natural resources throughout our value chain to produce and distribute refined petroleum products. However, we recognise the need to manage the use of natural resources effectively and efficiently while still being able to meet the demand of our customers.
As a company, we have made significant investments to reduce our impact across various environmental aspects, including: reducing resources consumption, air quality, waste water, solid waste, soil and groundwater pollution.

We are committed to protecting the environment.

Our environmental performance is enhanced through consistent monitoring and analysis of our carbon emissions and implementation of measures to continuously reduce these. Furthermore, we also have policies and procedures in place to manage and minimise impacts and have dedicated resources for environmental management.

Quality

Engen is committed to achieving and maintaining quality and reliability for all Engen products and services through effective implementation and maintenance of our quality management system.

We always strive to meet our customer expectations. To ensure we provide high quality products, we test our products regularly, have quality assurance measures in place, assess product integrity and ensure brand image is maintained.

Clean and Safe Campaign

Like many other businesses, the COVID-19 Pandemic has affected our business and how we operate going forward. A survey across the several markets in which Engen operates has shown that sanitization and hygiene are critical drivers of choice for consumers and the maintenance of cleanliness and hygiene standards has become of paramount importance. Consumers seek higher standards of sanitation and hygiene at service stations; forecourt, shop, service bays etc.

Engen Zimbabwe has proactively led in responding to these customer needs and has managed to position itself as having sites which are not only clean but safe.

We have deployed posters and flyers of our clean and safe 28 touch points across our retail network to raise awareness to customers and staff on the pandemic. All our site staff is always in complete PPE including WHO recommended face masks. We have encouraged observation of COVID-19 regulations to curb the spread of the pandemic through social distancing, sanitizing at every entrance, enforcing use of face masks for all who access our premises, limiting the number of people in the shop at a time, serving one car at a time at each pump, issuing hand sanitisers to each customer champion for use on motorists refueling at the forecourt and disinfecting of point of sale machines.
